Congratulations to Graham Ward and his new bride Karen, both from Didcot, who got married this weekend. Both are well known to 6024 through the Great Western Society at Didcot aswell as on mainline trips where Graham is an EWS fireman. We wish them both a happy & prosperous future together.
6024 was moved inside one of the shed's at Barton Hill today and the dismantling of the inside motion begun. The crosshead and piston were split and the con-rod taken down and the big end bearing removed and inspected. Although not part of the problem discovered last week, it was found that some of the white metal in the bearing had not tinned properly to the bearing shell, so this will also be replaced as well. The crosshead was also removed, with the piston remaining to come out.
Sadly, 6024 failed it's fitness to run exam earlier this afternoon. Movement had been discovered between the inside, right hand crosshead and piston, the cotter that locks the two together showing signs of the movement. This meant the locomotive was unfit for tomorrow's Torbay Express working for Past Time Rail. Unfortunately this also means the locomotive will also be unable to make it's commitments on the 9th and 15th September, for which we are extremely disappointed and sorry.
