With the loco now back outside on Road 1, the oppertunity was taken to steam the engine and make a check on the loco's braking system and TPWS. Having been out of action for a few months everything was found to be working as expected and the engine was moved up to the top shed for some work on the front end platework and a few other remaining jobs, before running back down to it's Road 1 home.

Subject to approval, the engine will now undertake a mainline test run in the coming weeks.

With the exception of some cladding at the front of the engine, 6024 is once again a complete locomotive. A large turnout of working party members on Saturday made sure the list of remaining jobs were completed in quick time and the loco will now be moved back out of the shed at Barton Hill to it's more customary home of Road 1. Final tasks saw the re-fitting of the cylinder cover, wishbone, drawhook and box section at the front of the engine. Underneath, the vacuum pump parts and air brake pipework were re-assembled. The piston gland was re-packed and assembled and final checks of all the work was carried out, not only by our engineering team, but also by an independent inspector.

It's now planned to steam the loco on the depot next weekend to check all the running systems prior, subject to approval, heading back onto the mainline for a test run/light engine move in the near future.

Another full weekend of progress on the repairs to the engine's motion, with piston, crosshead and connecting rod now all re-connected. Most of Saturday was spent scraping in the re-metaled big end bearing and with that done Sunday was all about fitting the motion and checking the various dimensions & clearances. Once done, the piston and crosshead were re-joined and then connected to the con rod. This means mechanically, things are well on the way to completion.
